HandyFuge PDF Print E-mail

The HandyFuge is a non-electrical, low speed and portable centrifuge.  It was designed for the purpose of quickly spinning down liquid samples in micro-tubes and multi-well plates.  The Handyfuge provides an effective way to spin your samples without the hassle of operating a large centrifuge.  It's a cost effective, personal benchtop centrifuge that can be moved around the lab or be used in the lab without concerns for an electrical power source.  The HandyFuge can also be used in the field and remote locations.

The HandyFuge is operated by simply pushing on a lever a few times - one, two, three.   No need to operate a cumbersome electrical centrifuge.

The HandyFuge can hold and spin:
76 micro-tubes (1.5ml-2.0ml micro-tubes, and 0.5ml or 0.2ml PCR tubes)
2 plates (96-well plate)

Using the HandyFuge to spin down your samples prior to performing real time qPCR or other experiments can result in more accurate and successful experiments.  The HandyFuge will spin down your sample to the bottom of the tube or well and help to expunge bubbles that may have formed during pipetting.  For example, in real time experiments we were able to increase reproducibility and lower CV of replicate wells by using the HandyFuge (click here for data).

The image below shows samples in a 96-well plate that were dyed with red food coloring to illustrate the problem prior to spinning in the HandyFuge.

Advantages of the HandyFuge over a conventional micro-tube or 96-well plate centrifuge.

  • Low Cost
  • Portable and can be used in remote locations.  For scientists doing field work this is the perfect answer to your centrifuge needs. Spin environmental or biological samples quickly and easily in the field.
  • When in the lab, the HandyFuge can be placed in the cold or warm room and you don't need to worry about effects on electronic parts.  The HandyFuge is a non-electrical centrifuge.
  • You can spin more samples than a conventional centrifuge.  Ever want to spin down 20-40 x 1.5 ml samples in a centrifuge?  You can do this in the HandyFuge.
  • Because the HandyFuge is portable and inexpensive you can have one for all your radioactive experiments. It is easily decontaminated because of its simple design.
  • For educational and training laboratories this is a low cost answer to meet your centrifuge needs. Are students ruining your expensive centrifuges because they don’t balance them? The HandyFuge is less susceptible to imbalance than expensive motor driven centrifuges. The HandyFuge can easily be replaced because of the low cost.
